Kayak Fishing at White Shell
Destination: White Shell, St. John's Creek

Directions: White Shell is south of Heckscher Dr, west of Sister's Creek and the Ferry. You can reach it via the Ferry and heading west, or taking the 9A Heckscher Dr exit east.

Description: White Shell is an area on the north bank of the St. Johns River just east of Sister's Creek. It is an open area protected by 2 small peninsulas and a series of rocks which host a wide variety of fish. The rocks are covered at high tide. Fish the inside, the outside, and the sloughs that form in the channels between the rocks. There are also oyster beds, sand bars, and grassy flats in the area that are productive. Directly across the river from the west end of White Shell is St. John's Creek, a nice little creek with a large sandbar at the entrance and oyster beds inside.

Difficulty: Easy to paddle. Beware the current on the edges of the rocks at low tide.

Closest Bait&Tackle Shop: White Shell Fish Camp.

Launches: There are 3 launches accesible for kayak fishing.

  • L1 - Area on the southwest of the first bridge from the west. There is room to park 3-4 cars here although your vehicle is exposed to traffic on Heckscher Dr. Beware of the high tide marks. At low tide there can be a lot of mud to walk through.
  • L2 - Area on the southwest of the bridge immediately west of the fish camp. There is room to park 2-3 cars here although your vehicle is exposed to traffic on Heckscher Dr. Beware of the high tide marks. At low tide there can be a lot of mud to walk through.
  • L3 - Just past the fish camp is Heritage River Rd, which parallels the shoreline. About 1/4 mile down you can turn right onto the white shell beach itself. This beach often has many people parked on it surffishing and has plenty of room to launch, and your vehicle is not exposed as L1 and L2.
